It is dangerous to enter any relationship without first pursuing personal wholeness. A wounded person will inevitably use their wounds as weapons, making healthy relationships impossible. The foundation of this wholeness is a healthy, biblical self-love, where your identity is defined not by your past, wounds, or others' opinions, but by what God says about you.

A person who is not whole cannot love another person healthily. They may use affection to manipulate, and their lack of love creates conflict ("where there is no love, there will be gloves"). The case of Lamech (Genesis 4) illustrates a man defined by his wounds, using violence and threats to protect himself.

A distorted self-image will destroy every relationship you enter. What you see about yourself determines how you feel about yourself.
