Asenath is our model here. Her father was an idol worshiper, a priest of Ra. By every natural standard, she was disqualified from receiving God's best. But God's grace transcended her background. She received a godly husband in Joseph. She received the blessing of Abraham. She became a mother in Israel.
We may have been born into families that did not know God. We may have inherited patterns of sin and brokenness. But through Christ, we have been adopted into a new family. We are children of the King. We are members of a royal priesthood and a holy nation. We have all the rights and privileges of firstborn sons and daughters.
Growing up in a broken or idolatrous family leaves wounds. Whether the idols were literal statues or things like money, alcohol, or work, these things wound us. Tonight, we ask God to heal those wounds—to bind up our broken hearts and make us emotionally and mentally whole.
