Mark 9 recounts the transfiguration, the healing of a demon-possessed boy, and further teachings on discipleship.  We can subdivide the chapter thematically for clearer understanding:

I. The Transfiguration (Mark 9:1-13):

* Summary: Jesus takes Peter, James, and John up a mountain, where He is transfigured before them, revealing His glory. Moses and Elijah appear, and Jesus speaks with them.

* Lessons:  Jesus' divine glory; the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy; the importance of prayer and intimacy with God; the need to listen to God's word.

* Application:  Seek intimacy with God through prayer and meditation; recognize Jesus' divine glory and authority; trust in God's promises; listen attentively to God's word.

II. Healing a Demon-Possessed Boy (Mark 9:14-29):

* Summary:  The disciples fail to cast out a demon from a boy. Jesus successfully casts out the demon, highlighting the disciples' limited faith and the power of prayer and fasting.  The father's plea, "I believe; help my unbelief!" expresses the struggle between faith and doubt.

* Lessons:  The power of prayer and fasting; the limitations of human ability without God's power; the importance of persistent faith; the struggle between faith and doubt is common.

* Application:  Seek God's power in prayer and fasting; recognize our limitations and dependence on God; persevere in faith, even in times of doubt; pray for increased faith.

III. Further Teachings on Discipleship (Mark 9:30-50):

* Summary: Jesus predicts His suffering, death, and resurrection.  He emphasizes the importance of humility, forgiveness, and self-denial.  He warns against causing others to stumble and emphasizes the importance of removing obstacles to faith.

* Lessons:  Following Jesus involves suffering and self-denial; humility is essential for discipleship; forgiveness is crucial; we should avoid actions that lead others astray; removing hindrances to faith is vital.

* Application:  Embrace the cost of discipleship; cultivate humility and selflessness; practice forgiveness; be mindful of our actions and their impact on others; remove obstacles to faith in our lives and in the lives of others.

IV.  Greatness Through Service (Mark 9:33-37):

* Summary:  A discussion ensues on who is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Jesus teaches that greatness is found not in power or position but in humble service.

* Lessons:  True greatness lies in humility and service; leadership involves serving others; following Jesus requires self-denial.

* Application:  Prioritize service over self-advancement; lead by example; be willing to serve others humbly.

Mark 9 offers a powerful message about the nature of faith, discipleship, and the kingdom of God.  The lessons emphasize the importance of prayer, humility, and self-denial.  The applications encourage readers to live lives of faith, service, and commitment to Christ, even in the face of adversity and challenges.  The chapter highlights the interplay between the divine (transfiguration) and the human (struggle with faith, discipleship challenges).
