Sunday 15-02-2025 : ABIGAIL SUNDAY SERVICE - A ROYAL SHIFT IS COMING
POINT 1 | FOUNDATION CHECK : What motivated the relationship between Nabal and Abigail?
● Arranged marriage was the custom of the day, so Abigail was probably wed to Nabal for his wealth, not for love. While she was a faithful and savvy woman, Nabal’s name (meaning “fool”) and his actions showed he was indeed a fool.
● 1 Samuel 25:2 And there was a man in Maon, whose possessions were in Carmel; and the man was very great, and he had three thousand sheep, and a thousand goats: and he was shearing his sheep in Carmel.
● POINT : THERE ARE MANY THINGS THAT MONEY CAN BUY. BUT THERE are THAT MONEY CANNOT BUY ... HAPPINESS ... GODLINESS ... WISDOM ...
● So, when the foundation is wrong, nothing should be expected to be right.
● You are free to choose, but you are not free from the consequences of your choice.
● *Psalm 11:3* If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?
● *Application* | What motivated you to enter that relationship?
POINT 2 : PROFILE CHECK (MARRIED FOR WHAT OR MARRIED FOR WHO ? WHO DID YOU MARRY?)
● There are four kinds of riches.
- There are riches in what you have,
- Riches in what you do,
- Riches in what you know, and
- Riches in what you are (Riches of character.)
● How does the Bible describe Nabal and Abigail?
● Opposite/ characters like day and night.

PROFILE CHECK FROM DAVID FROM 1 Samuel 25:32-34 KJV
[33] And blessed be thy advice, and blessed be thou, which hast kept me this day from coming to shed blood, and from avenging myself with mine own hand.
[34] For in very deed, as the LORD God of Israel liveth, which hath kept me back from hurting thee, except thou hadst hasted and come to meet me, surely there had not been left unto Nabal by the morning light any that pisseth against the wall.
ATTITUDE CHECK : THOUGHT / TALK /
TREAT / TEMPER
● How one thinks. How one talks. How one treats others...
● What made Nabal carry such a profile is those 4 T : how he thinks. How he talks. How he treats others. His temper.
● He thinks only about himself. He talks carelessly. He treats other poorly and badly. He does not control his temper.
● David and his men had protected Nabal’s men and possessions, so Nabal should have shared the fruits of his wealth with David, having profited from his services
● David asked for very little, just for whatever he had on hand to feed them-it was a festive time, celebrating the profits from shearing the sheep-David didn’t ask for a share of the profits, just a some provisions at festival time
● 1 Samuel 25:8 Ask thy young men, and they will shew thee. Wherefore let the young men find favour in thine eyes: for we come in a good day: give, I pray thee, whatsoever cometh to thine hand unto thy servants, and to thy son David.
● If it were not for David, highly probably that Nabal would have lost a great deal of his wealth to Philistines who were plundering threshing floors-at the least, Nabal owe David a share of his profits, since he had profited from David’s protection
● 1 Samuel 25:10 And Nabal answered David's servants, and said, Who is David? and who is the son of Jesse? there be many servants now a days that break away every man from his master.
● 1 Samuel 25:10 CEV This is what he said: Who does this David think he is? That son of Jesse is just one more slave on the run from his master, and there are too many of them these days.
● 1 Samuel 25:10 GNT and Nabal finally answered, "David? Who is he? I've never heard of him! The country is full of runaway slaves nowadays!
● 1 Samuel 25:10 Voice Nabal: Who is David? Who is this son of Jesse? I've never heard of him, so he must be nothing more than a slave who abandoned his master.
- Proud and Arrogant – Having an exaggerated sense of superiority – Disdainful
- Belittling – Actively making others feel small or unimportant.
- Derogatory – Using language meant to insult or degrade.
- Contemptuous – Showing open scorn or disrespect.
- Disparaging – Speaking of others in a demeaning or critical way.
- Emotionally abusive – His behavior was repeated and harmful.
ATTITUDE CHECK ...
● 1 Samuel 25:11 Shall I then take my bread, and my water, and my flesh that I have killed for my shearers, and give it unto men, whom I know not whence they be?
● 1 Samuel 25:11 ERV I have bread and water, and I have the meat I killed for my servants who cut the wool from my sheep. But I won't give them to men I don't even know."
ATTITUDE CHECK ...
- Uncharitable / Miserly – Withholding generosity despite abundance.
- Contemptuous – Dismissing others as unworthy (“men I don’t even know”).
- Ungrateful (or ingrate) — David's men had protected Nabal's shepherds and flocks for a long time without harming anything, yet Nabal shows zero thanks and acts like it never happened.
- Selfish / self-centered / greedy — Everything is "my bread… my water… my meat" — he hoards what he has and won't share even a little, despite being very rich.
- Rude / arrogant / insolent — He insults David by calling him a nobody/runaway servant and treats the messengers with contempt.
- Churlish (an older English word that fits perfectly here) — meaning surly, ill-tempered, stingy, and lacking basic courtesy/hospitality.
- Fool (or foolish person) — The Bible itself calls him this repeatedly (his name + his wife's description in verse 25: "worthless man… folly is with him"). In biblical terms, this isn't just being silly; it's moral foolishness — wicked, lacking wisdom, scorning what's right/good — careless — talk without thinking — put his whole family and household in trouble
- Mean-spirited or harsh (the text literally describes him as "harsh and evil in his dealings" in verse 3).
ABIGAIL'S ATTITUDE
13 times Abigail addresses David as "lord" (high respect and submission) : Talk respectfully
5 times Abigail calls herself "David's maidservant" : Talk humbly
3 questions when talking : Think before you speak
- Should I say it?
- Should I say it now?
- Should I be the one to say it?
- Attitude matters
- Responsibility matters
- Wisdom matters
1 Samuel 25:23 KJV And when Abigail saw David, she hasted, and lighted off the ass, and fell before David on her face, and bowed herself to the ground,
1 Samuel 25:24 KJV And fell at his feet, and said, Upon me, my lord, upon me let this iniquity be: and let thine handmaid, I pray thee, speak in thine audience, and hear the words of thine handmaid.
1 Samuel 25:25 KJV Let not my lord, I pray thee, regard this man of Belial, even Nabal: for as his name is, so is he; Nabal is his name, and folly is with him: but I thine handmaid saw not the young men of my lord, whom thou didst send.
1 Samuel 25:26 KJV Now therefore, my lord, as the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, seeing the LORD hath withholden thee from coming to shed blood, and from avenging thyself with thine own hand, now let thine enemies, and they that seek evil to my lord, be as Nabal.
1 Samuel 25:27 KJV And now this blessing which thine handmaid hath brought unto my lord, let it even be given unto the young men that follow my lord.
1 Samuel 25:28 KJV
I pray thee, forgive the trespass of thine handmaid: for the LORD will certainly make my lord a sure house; because my lord fighteth the battles of the LORD, and evil hath not been found in thee all thy days.
- Wise / discerning / woman of good understanding (the Bible explicitly calls her this in verse 3, and her speech shows deep insight and foresight)
- Humble / humble-hearted (extreme humility: bowing face to the ground, calling herself "thine handmaid" repeatedly, taking blame on herself to protect others)
- Intelligent / clever / of good sense/emotionally intelligent (her words are articulate, strategic, and persuasive; she de-escalates a violent situation masterfully) ... She reads: David’s anger, The urgency of the situation, The correct tone and timing , Her words de-escalate a volatile leader without provoking him.
- Diplomatic / peacemaker / wise negotiator (she prevents bloodshed by appealing to honor, prophecy, and God's justice rather than confrontation)
- Courageous / brave (she risks her life approaching an angry armed band led by a future king, without her husband's knowledge or permission)
- Gracious / kind / generous (she brings provisions as a "blessing," intercedes for her foolish husband, and speaks respectfully even under threat)
- Prophetic / spiritually insightful (she speaks of God's plan for David, his coming kingship, and prays his enemies be "as Nabal" — showing faith and recognition of divine purposes)
- Intercessory / Mediatorial She stands between wrath and destruction, taking blame that is not hers to stop violence ... “Upon me… let this iniquity be.” ... She absorbs consequences to protect others ... This is intercession, not guilt.

-vs. 18 hot-tempered man stirs up strife (Nabal, David), but the slow to anger calms a dispute (Abigail)-

vs. 33 the fear of the LORD is the instruction for wisdom, and before honor comes humility (Nabal’s problem)
WHAT TO DO WHEN TRAPPED IN SUCH A
RELATIONSHIP? IT IS ALL ABOUT YOUR CHOICE
● 1st FACT / You can choose to run away, to fight him/her or let God fight for you. It is a choice.
Abigail chose not to fight but let God fight for her. As a matter of fact, God himself stroke Nabal who died and Abigail became the king's wife.
Exodus 14:14 "*The LORD shall fight for you*, and ye shall hold your peace."
2 Chronicles 20:17 Ye shall not [need] to fight in this [battle]*: set yourselves, stand ye [still], and see the salvation of the LORD with you, O Judah and Jerusalem: fear not, nor be dismayed; to morrow go out against them: for the LORD [will be] with you."
● 2nd FACT / You can choose to become as bitter, weird and vile as he or she is or let God have his way in your heart. It is a choice. Abigail chose and preferred not to stop to continue to be kind, godly, welcoming, God fearing, honoring servants of God.
She never allowed herself to be contaminated by evil but knew how to overcome evil with good.
Romans 12:21 "Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good."
● 3rd FACT / You can choose to focus on your partner's misbehavior, drunkeness, arrogance and waste your time complaining about it and weigh yourself down because of it or focus on Jesus.
Listen to what Abigail says to David in
1 Samuel 25:25, "You shouldn’t take this worthless person Nabal seriously. He is like his name. His name is Nabal [Godless Fool], and he’s foolish.."
She knew she cannot change him so she chose to focus on how to become herself a better person.
● 4th FACT / You can choose to wish him/her evil or pray (intercede) for him/her.
Abigail could have left David come and kill Nabal. But she stood and interceded for him so that evil would not befall him.
CONCLUSION : GOD HAS A WAY OUT ...
1 Corinthians 10:13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
Psalm 124:7 Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers: The snare is broken, and we are escaped. ... Our soul is like a sparrow escaped from a snare of ...
Psalm 91:3 Surely He will deliver you from the snare of the fowler, and from the deadly plague.
2 Thessalonians 3:1 Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may have free course, and be glorified, even as it is with you:
2 Thessalonians 3:2 And that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men: for all men have not faith.
2 Thessalonians 3:3 But the Lord is faithful, who shall stablish you, and keep you from evil.
GENERAL PROPHETIC CONCLUSION
“There is a royal destiny within you—a king or queen waiting to awaken—but only those with revelation will recognize it.”
There was a dormant queen in Abigail but Nabal failed to appreciate it because he could not see it. Our God who is a good God is not and cannot be indifferent when you live in such a relationhip where you cry more than you laugh, where you fear more than you are safe.
1 Samuel 25:40 KJV And when the servants of David were come to Abigail to Carmel, they spake unto her, saying, David sent us unto thee, to take thee to him to wife.
1 Samuel 25:41 KJV And she arose, and bowed herself on her face to the earth, and said, Behold, let thine handmaid be a servant to wash the feet of the servants of my lord.
1 Samuel 25:42 KJV And Abigail hasted, and arose, and rode upon an ass, with five damsels of hers that went after her; and she went after the messengers of David, and became his wife.
“David was a shepherd before he became king. Nabal scorned him, and only a few recognized his worth, joining him in the wilderness. Some even presented him to King Saul as just a simple singer. Yet in the end, David ascended the throne and fulfilled his destiny.”
