In Ephesians 3:20, Paul
says, “God is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think,
according to the power that worketh in us,”
When we speak about the power of the Holy Spirit, we speak about
what the Holy Spirit is able to do. According to this text, Paul makes it clear
that God is able to do not only all things but also exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think.
Though God has power to do all things, he can only do according
to the power that worketh in us. What does it mean?
1) It means first of all that God can do nothing with idle power.
What
is idle power? Idle power means that the power is there but it is inactive, it
is not working, it is unoccupied, it is inoperative, it is dormant.
2) It means secondly that God can do nothing with stagnating power.
What
is stagnating power? Stagnating power means that the power is
there, but it is not growing, it is not making progress, it is not increasing.
3) It means thirdly that God can do nothing with unknown power.
What is
unknown power? Unknown power means that the power is there, but
it is ignored, it is unidentified, it is disregarded.
CONCLUSION
Men in the bible who were used by the Holy Spirit were men
like us. They had weaknesses like any other mortal man. They were not perfect.
Many a times God has rebuked them and even punished them. But none of these things
were an excuse for them not to be used by God.
God used them to part the red sea, to cause plagues in the
earth, to part rivers, to stop rain for
years, to raise the dead, to multiply food, to bring fire on the earth, to kill
giants, to subdue kingdoms, to do all kind of strange and mighty things as
empowered by the Spirit of God.
What made the difference in their life? 3 things:
1) They’ve never allowed the power of God in them to remain idle. They’ve
worked. None of them were lazy. All of them were hard-working in prayer, in
fasting, in seeking God, in meditating the Word, in keeping their altar on fire ...
2) They’ve never allowed the power of God in them to remain stagnant.
They were actively changing from one level of power to another by engaging
their faith, by obeying the instructions of the Lord, …
3) They knew and were very aware of the fact that they were carrying
the power of God. They were not ashamed to declare it boldly.
QUESTION : WHAT ABOUT YOU AND I? IS THE POWER OF GOD WORKING IN YOU OR IS IT IDLE ? STAGNATING? UNKNOWN?
