I AM THE APPLE OF GOD'S EYE
God treasures in a particular and a special way the people with which he
is in the covenant. He treats them differently with others. Not because they
are better than anybody else but because they belong to a better covenant. For example,
God calls his people “the apple of his eye”.
Why does God call his people “the
apple of his eye”? “What does it mean?”
The Bible references below (from the King James Version, translated in
1611) contain the English idiom "apple of my eye." However the
"apple" reference comes from English idiom, not biblical Hebrew. The
Hebrew literally says, "dark part of the eye." The Hebrew idiom also
refers to the pupil, and has the same meaning, but does not parallel the
English use of "apple."
In Old English, the pupil of the eye (the round,
dark center) was called the 'apple'. It was thought that
the pupil was a round object much like an apple (a piece of fruit). When you
look at someone, their reflection appears in your pupil. So if someone is the
'apple of your eye', he or she is someone that you look at a lot and enjoy
seeing.
The same way the apple of one’s eye is a very sensitive place and
therefore very protected, the same way being the apple of God’s eye, he holds
His children close, and He can protect them as easily as our eyelids protect
our pupils as we can read in the Scriptures below.
It is written in Deuteronomy
32:10 “He found him in a desert land, in a place of horror, and of vast wilderness:
he led him about, and taught him: and he
kept him as the apple of his eye.”
It is written also in Zechariah
2:8 “For thus saith the Lord of hosts: After the glory he hath sent me to
the nations that have robbed you: for he that toucheth you, toucheth the apple of my eye:”
It is written again in Psalms
17:8 (16-8) “From them that resist thy right hand keep me, as the apple of thy eye. Protect me
under the shadow of thy wings.”
My friend, understand today that in Christ, you are “the apple of God’s eye”.
What does it mean? It means first of all that you are called to reflect his
image on the earth. When people see you, they must see God. It means secondly that
God loves and treasures you more than anything else on earth. It means thirdly that God watches over you with
a particular attention.
What is your responsibility?
The same way the apple of the eye is one of
the parts that we keep closely , the same way you will enjoy the benefits of
being the apple of God’s eye if you value your closeness to God more than your
closeness to men, to material things or anything else in your life.
