Most people long for true, deep friendships, but give little heed to how they select their friends. Concerning Jonathan and David, the Bible says in 1 Samuel 18:1
"And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul."
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A FRIENDSHP IS COVENANT-BASED ?
In a covenant-based friendship, 3 things happen
The Bible says in 1 Samuel 18:4
And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle.
😐1st thing : Jonathan stripped himself of the robe and gave it to David
What does it mean? In a covenant-based friendship, the friends say to one another
"I will not judge you from the clothes of your past. Let's put on new clothes and cover one another with the clothe of love"
The Bible says in Colossians 3:9-10
"Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:
The Bible continues in Colossians 3:12-14
"Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; 3:13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. 3:14 And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness."
😐 2nd thing : Jonathan stripped himself of the sword and gave it to David
What does it mean? In a covenant-based friendship, the friends say to one another
"The Sword of the Word is our common weapon.Your battles are my battles. My battles are your battles. Your enemies are my enemies. My enemies are your enemies"
Speaking to the people of Israel in Exodus 23:22, God says,
"But if thou shalt indeed obey his voice, and do all that I speak; then I will be an enemy unto thine enemies, and an adversary unto thine adversaries."
😐 3rd thing : Jonathan stripped himself of the belt and gave it to David
What does it mean? In a covenant-based friendship, the friends vow to one another to be true and honest.
Speaking about his covenant with David, the Lord says in Psalm 89:35
"On my holiness I have taken an oath once and for all: I will not lie to David."
APPLICATION : ARE YOU IN A COVENANT-BASED REATIONSHIP WITH GOD?
- If yes, you are covered under the mantle of the love of God. No devil, no evil, no harm will reach you
- If yes, your battles and struggles become God's battles and struggles
- If yes, you will witness the promises of God coming true all the days of your life

AS YOU KEEP YOUR PART OF YOUR COVENANT WITH THE LORD, MAY YOU REMAIN COVERED UNDER THE WING OF THE ALMIGHTY, MAY YOUR BATTLES BECOME GOD'S BATTLES, MAY YOU EXPERIENCE THE INTEGRITY OF THE LORD ALL THE DAYS OF YOUR LIFE IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST !!!
