POINT 1 : WHY WERE ALTARS BUILT ?
The Hebrew word translated “altar” is mizbeach, which comes from the word zabach meaning to slaughter an animal.
- An altar is therefore nothing more than a slaughter place.
- It is place where a person slays an animal and offers it up in sacrifice to the Lord. An altar was not a pretty sight.
- It was a place of blood, of fire and smoke, of burning flesh—a place filled with the stench of death. It was not a place that anyone would be attracted to apart from a deep desire to please God.
The Bible teaches a powerful concept called "visitation." The Hebrew word for visitation, paqad, indicates a time when the Eternal God breaks into human history in order to bless or to punish individuals or nations.
This visitation always changes the destiny of the person or nation, whether they are ready for it or not. In fact, very few people are ready for a visitation from God.
When Jesus shows up in a divine visitation, it will have a profound impact on us. It will change our lives. I don't believe it is possible for a child of God to come into His very presence and then to go away unchanged.

- When God visited Abraham and Sarah, their 25-year- wait for Isaac became a thing of the past.
- When God visited the children of Israel who had been in captivity for 430 years, they did not go empty-handed; they were loaded with gold and precious gifts.
- When God visited Mary, who was a virgin, her not knowing a man became irrelevant. She miraculously conceived and gave birth to a Son.
When God visited the man at the pool of Bethesda, after waiting for 38 years for human help, he did not need anyone’s help anymore.
POINT 3 : THE TRANSGENERATIONAL BRIDGE OF BLESSINGS
According to Scriptures, the altars built by our patriarchs Abraham, Isaac and Jacob were connected to specific divine appearances or visitations in their lives.
In those texts, the Bible reveals that anytime God appeared to visit them, they reacted and connected to it by building an altar.
The main reason why they were building altars after such was to turn the divine visitation into divine habitation.
In other words, it was like they were telling God to not just visit and pass by but also to visit and dwell.
In fact, they were building altars with the perspective that the visitation should not only be limited to them but also should cross their generation to reach the next generations after them.
In their mind they were so much aware of the fact that a blessing is not really a blessing until it is transferred and transmittted to the next generation. And the transgenerational bridge of blessing is the altar.

Back to Scriptures, we read this :
a) Concerning Abraham
"THE LORD APPEARED UNTO ABRAM, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land: and THERE BUILDED HE AN ALTAR unto the Lord , who appeared unto him." (Genesis 12:7)
b) Concerning Isaac
"THE LORD APPEARED UNTO HIM the same night, and said, I am the God of Abraham thy father: fear not, for I am with thee, and will bless thee, and multiply thy seed for my servant Abraham's sake. And HE BUILDED AN ALTAR THERE, and called upon the name of the Lord , and pitched his tent there: and there Isaac's servants digged a well." (Genesis 26:24-25)
c) Concerning Jacob
"God said unto Jacob, Arise, go up to Beth-el, and dwell there: and make there an ALTAR UNTO GOD, THAT APPEARED UNTO THEE when thou fleddest from the face of Esau thy brother." (Genesis 35:1)
