7-Day Devotional: “Who Is a Stranger?” | Day 3 : Test the Spirits*

7-Day Devotional: “Who Is a Stranger?” | Day 3 : Test the Spirits*

Scripture:

1 John 4:1 (NKJV) – “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.”

Not every anointed voice is a godly vessel. Not every miracle worker walks in holiness. The early church was warned repeatedly about deceptive spirits masquerading as truth (2 Corinthians 11:14–15). Tongues, prophecies, and even generosity can be imitated—but only the Holy Spirit produces lasting fruit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22–23).

Testing the spirits doesn’t mean cynicism—it means alignment with Scripture. Ask: Does this person point me to Christ or to themselves? Do their actions reflect humility or manipulation? Is their life marked by integrity when no one is watching?

Application:

Before accepting counsel, partnership, or deep friendship, pray: “Lord, is this person truly from You?” Wait for confirmation in peace, not just emotion.

Closing Prayer:

Holy Spirit, sharpen my spiritual senses. Help me distinguish between what feels good and what is truly of God. Guard my heart from deception. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
