7 Days of Unexpected Helpers | Day 4: Discern the Motives of the Unexpected

7 Days of Unexpected Helpers | Day 4: Discern the Motives of the Unexpected

Scripture:

“And David went out to meet them, and answered and said unto them, If ye be come peaceably unto me to help me, mine heart shall be knit unto you: but if ye be come to betray me to mine enemies... the God of our fathers look thereon, and rebuke it.”

—1 Chronicles 12:17 (KJV)

● David wasn’t just open to unexpected help — he was also discerning. He didn't blindly accept every person who showed up. Instead, he tested their intentions. Were they truly sent by God, or were they spies sent to betray him? David didn’t respond with suspicion, but with spiritual wisdom.

● This is a critical lesson for us : just because someone arrives in our life during a difficult season doesn't automatically mean they are God-sent. We must test the spirits, as 1 John 4:1 instructs. Not every helper is from heaven, and not every supporter has pure motives.

● Yet, when Amasai spoke, the Spirit of God came upon him and he declared peace and loyalty to David. In that moment, David discerned that these men were truly sent by God, and he welcomed them fully.

● We need this same balance — to be open-hearted, but also Spirit-led. Discernment is not suspicion; it is wisdom led by peace and confirmation from the Holy Spirit. Let the peace of God rule in your heart (Colossians 3:15).

Reflection

Are you welcoming everyone without discernment, or are you shutting the door too quickly on those God may have sent? Ask the Lord for clarity, not just comfort.

Prayer

Father, give me a heart that is open yet wise. Help me to discern who is sent by You and who is not. May Your peace be the umpire in my spirit, guiding my decisions and my relationships. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
