7 Days of Unexpected Helpers | Day 3 : Be Open to the Unexpected
Scripture:
“They were armed with bows, and could use both the right hand and the left in hurling stones and shooting arrows out of a bow, even of Saul's brethren of Benjamin.”
—1 Chronicles 12:2 (KJV)
● God often answers prayers in ways that challenge our assumptions. When David was in hiding, some of his unexpected helpers were from the tribe of Saul — the very man who was trying to kill him! These weren’t neutral outsiders. They were Saul’s relatives, skilled in battle, and technically David’s enemies. Yet, they showed up not to destroy David, but to defend him.
● Imagine the courage it took for David to welcome them. He could have rejected them based on their past associations or feared betrayal. But instead, he chose to be open-minded, discerning, and led by the Spirit of God.
● In our lives, we often box God into our expectations. We assume He’ll help us through familiar channels — people we know, trust, and expect to show up. But sometimes, God sends help through unfamiliar faces, unusual places, and even people from past opposition.
● Being open to the unexpected doesn’t mean being naïve — it means being spiritually aware. It means listening for God’s voice even when it comes through the mouths of surprising messengers.
Reflection
Is your heart open to the people God may be sending your way — even if they don't look like the help you expected? Are you willing to set aside prejudice, past pain, and pride to embrace God’s provision?
Prayer
Lord, stretch my heart and my understanding. Teach me to welcome Your help, even when it comes through unexpected people. Help me to trust in Your divine wisdom, and not lean on my own expectations. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
