THE 7 ALTARS BUILT BY ABRAHAM, ISAAC AND JACOB | WED 19-02-205 | THE ALTAR OF HEBRON

Genesis 13:18 Then Abram removed his tent, and came and dwelt in the plain of Mamre, which is in Hebron, and built there an altar unto the LORD.

In the ancient Near East, altars were not merely religious symbols but served as physical markers.

The event of Abram building an altar at Hebron occurs after a period of strife between Abram's herdsmen and those of his nephew Lot. To resolve the conflict, Abram offers Lot the choice of land, and Lot chooses the fertile plains of the Jordan Valley, settling near Sodom. Abram remains in the land of Canaan, specifically in the region of Hebron.

Hebron means “fellowship” or “association”, signifying a place of deep communion with God.

What happened after Lot separated from Abram? The LORD told Abram to look around in every direction—north, south, east, and west. He promised Abram that all the land he could see would be given to him and his descendants forever. ( Genesis 13:14)

By building an altar at Hebron, Abram commemorated a pivotal moment of peace and resolution following the conflict with Lot. This act symbolized not only the cessation of discord with his nephew but also the beginning of his rightful claim of ownership to the land that God had promised him.

The altar served as a memorial to both the harmonious conclusion of familial strife and the fulfillment of divine instruction, marking the land as his own and new beginnings.
