Voices: Discerning the Stranger's Voice and Honoring the Voice of God

"Voices: Discerning the Stranger's Voice and Honoring the Voice of God"

I. Introduction

The kingdom operates by voices – every altar has a voice, every covenant speaks.

Life is a battle of voices: the voice of God, the voice of man, and the voice of strangers (false prophets, false teachers, deceivers).

Jesus says the sheep know His voice and flee from strangers – meaning discernment is a birthright of true believers.

John 10:5 (KJV)

"And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers."

In a world saturated with voices—teachers, influencers, ideologies, traditions, and spirits—we must relearn how to hear only the voice of our Shepherd.

Jesus, the Good Shepherd, gives a powerful image: His sheep recognize His voice. They do not follow unfamiliar voices—they flee from them. This is not mere ignorance but spiritual discernment.

The Danger of Strange Voices

1. False Prophets & False Teachers

Matthew 7:15

"Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves."

They mimic truth but lead to destruction. Their message may sound spiritual, but their fruit reveals them: division, pride, greed, and rebellion against divine order.

2. Vain Talkers & Deceivers

Titus 1:10–11 (KJV)

"For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers... whose mouths must be stopped..."

These are not just noisy people—they are subverters of households, leading believers astray for filthy lucre’s sake (money, power, influence). Their words are empty, self-serving, and spiritually corrosive.

"Whose mouths must be stopped" — This is not censorship, but spiritual discipline. Like a dangerous infection, error must be cut off before it spreads.

The Supremacy of God’s Voice

God speaks. And when He speaks, creation responds.

Genesis 3:8 – The Voice in the Garden

"And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden..."

Even after sin, God came in voice and presence. Adam and Eve heard Him—but responded in fear and hiding. Why? Because they had already begun to doubt His voice under the serpent’s whisper.

Genesis 3:10 – Confession of Fear

"I heard Thy voice... and I was afraid..."

Sin distorts our hearing. We begin to fear the voice of God instead of loving it. The enemy’s first attack is always on God’s word (Genesis 3:1: "Yea, hath God said?").

⚔️ How God Silences Strange Voices

God does not argue endlessly with lies. He silences them with divine authority.

1. By Authority – Jesus Commands the Wind

"Peace, be still!"  Mark 4:39

When chaos rages—whether in nature or in the human soul—Christ speaks, and the storm obeys. His word carries authority over every demonic, distracting, or destructive voice.

2. By Rebuke – Zechariah and the High Priest

The angel rebuked Satan over Joshua the High Priest. When the accuser rises, God rebukes him. We don’t have to fight every battle alone. The Lord defends His anointed.

"And the LORD said unto Satan, The LORD rebuke thee..." Zechariah 3:2

3. By Signs & Wonders – The Lame Man at the Beautiful Gate

Miracles silence gainsayers. Peter’s voice carried the power of Christ. The man was healed, and silence fell upon the critics. Authentic power silences skepticism.

"In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk." Acts 3:6 KJV

“And beholding the man which was healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it.” Acts 4:14 KJV

4. Silence in the Grave

Korah’s rebellion ended in judgment and was silenced in the grave.

Numbers 16:32 KJV

And the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their houses, and all the men that appertained unto Korah, and all their goods.

5. By Scripture – The Sword of the Spirit

"It is written..."  Jesus in Matthew 4

When tempted by the devil, Jesus did not reason or debate—He quoted Scripture. The voice of God in written form defeats the voice of deception.

The Destructive Voices in Scripture

These represent spiritual attacks that still operate today:

Korah’s Voice : Attacks Leadership – Rebellion against Moses & Aaron (Numbers 16)

Korah challenged Moses’ God-given authority.

This voice whispers rebellion, division, and dishonor toward ordained leaders.

How to Silence: Stand firm in God’s calling, let the earth (judgment) swallow rebellion through prayer and fasting.

Jezebel’s Voice : Attacks the Prophetic – Threatening Elijah, promoting false prophets (1 Kings 19)

Jezebel threatened Elijah, driving him into fear and discouragement.

This voice seeks to silence true prophets through intimidation, accusations, and witchcraft.

How to Silence:Confront Jezebel with boldness, prophetic declarations, and fresh anointing (as in 1 Kings 19:16).

Judas’ Voice : Attacks the Sacrifice Betrayal of Christ for silver (Matthew 26)

Judas criticized Mary’s offering, labeling it waste.

This voice attacks generosity and sacrificial giving, pushing believers into stinginess.

How to Silence:Follow Christ’s defense of sacrifice (“Leave her alone”) and continue honoring God with costly worship.

Serpent’s Voice : Attacks Divine Instruction – "Hath God said?" (Genesis 3:1-5)

The serpent twisted God’s word, making Eve doubt divine instructions.

This voice plants doubt, rebellion, and curiosity that leads to sin.

How to Silence:Declare “It is written”, cling to God’s original command without alteration.

Sennacherib’s Voice : Attacks God’s Authority  Boasting against God and Hezekiah  (2 Kings 18–19)

Sennacherib mocked God and spoke publicly to demoralize God’s people.

This voice attacks faith with loud threats and unbelief.

How to Silence:Use the written word, prayer, and angelic intervention (as Hezekiah did in 2 Kings 19:35).

Ahitophel’s Voice : Attacks Divine Counsel – Wise counsel used for betrayal; David prayed for its defeat (2 Samuel 15–17)

Ahithophel’s counsel was almost divine but aimed to destroy David.

This voice offers strategic yet ungodly advice, plotting downfall of God’s chosen.

"The counsel of Ahithophel, which he now gave, was as if a man had inquired at the oracle of God..."  2 Samuel 16:23

Even wise-sounding advice becomes deadly when aligned against God’s anointed. But God raised up Hushai to counter it. God sends counter-voices—wise, faithful, aligned with His heart.

How to Silence:Pray for God to turn wise counsel into foolishness(as David prayed in 2 Sam 15:31).

The old prophet’s voice : Attacks Divine Direction -

1 Kings 13:11–22 – The man of God received a clear instruction from the Lord: “Eat no bread, drink no water, and do not return the same way.”

An old prophet lied, claiming an angel had given a new directive. This strange voice caused the man of God to disobey, leading to his death.

The old prophet lied, leading the man of God to disobey.

This voice uses familiarity and counterfeit prophecyto divert destiny.

How to Silence:Stick to the original word God spoke to you; reject “updates” that contradict divine instructions.

✅ How to Respond to Strange Voices

1. Know the Voice of the Shepherd

Spend time in His presence. Abide in His Word. The more familiar you are with His voice, the quicker you’ll recognize an imposter.

John 10:27 KJV "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me."

1 John 4:1 KJV Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

2. Flee, Don’t Follow

Don’t entertain deception. Don’t “dialogue” with rebellion. Flee.

"Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness..."  2 Timothy 2:22

3. Stop the Mouths of the Vain : Rebuke deception with boldness

This means:

Church discipline (Matthew 18)

Rejecting false doctrine (1 Timothy 1:3–4)

Protecting the flock (Acts 20:28–30)

Speaking truth in love (Ephesians 4:15)

4. Let God’s Voice Be The Final Authority And Swallow the Strange Voices

Like Moses’ rod consuming the magicians’ serpents (Exodus 7:12), the voice of God devours the voice of the stranger when we stand in faith.

Hebrews 4:12 KJV

For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Final Call: Return to the Voice

In a culture of noise—social media, endless opinions, spiritual confusion—we must recover the holy silence that listens for God.

"Be still, and know that I am God." Psalm 46:10

Don’t be shaped by the voices of fear, manipulation, or tradition. Be shaped by the still, small voice (1 Kings 19:12), the voice that speaks life, truth, and peace.

Prayer for Discernment

Father, give me ears to hear Your voice alone. Train my heart to flee every strange sound. Silence every Jezebel, every Korah, every Ahitophel in my life. Let Your Word be my only compass. Let Your Spirit be my constant Guide. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Remember:

You don’t need to hear every voice.

You only need to hear His.

"This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased: hear ye Him."

Matthew 17:5

Hear. Obey. Follow. In silence, listen—and then speak only what He says.
